In December last year, Mark Standen, the former assistant director of the NSW Crime Commission, was sentenced to 22 years in jail with a non-parole period of 16 years. As a 30-year veteran in law enforcement, he knew the ins and outs of drug crime and the policing networks that existing to combat it. He was found guilty of attempting to import more than $100 million worth of illegal drugs, and was shown to have coordinated a drug operation which extended from rebels in the Congo to drug lords in the Netherlands, from street gangs in Pakistan to crime figures in Australia.
