The classic picture of aid to the worlds poorest is huge sacks of grain being handed out off the back of trucks - food aid.
Direct, simple, but not exactly long term. It is one of the great criticisms of aid - that it distorts local markets and creates dependency but does not address the underlying problems. Mike Thomson reports on how some aid agencies are now turning their attention to a different way of giving - handing out money instead of food. |
